How to Get to Machu Picchu in 2025

If this is your first trip to Machu Picchu, one of the most important archaeological sites in South America and the world, let me warn you that it’s a great challenge to reach this wonder of the modern world because you’ll have to use different types of transportation, such as a bus and a train, just to get there, even in 2025. I mean, the fact that it was so hidden is the reason it was in amazing condition when it was “discovered” hundreds of years later.

It’s extremely important to plan ahead due to high demand for all services, such as transportation and tickets to Machu Picchu. But all the effort is worth it for the chance to see the majesty of the Inca citadel and the natural historical beauty of the surroundings.

Where Is Machu Picchu?

The archaeological site of Machu Picchu is located in southern Peru in the district of Machupicchu. Yes, Machupicchu is its own district! This district is in the Province of Urubamba, which is itself in the Department of Cusco. From the city of Cusco, it’s approximately 80km northwest.

How Do You Get to Machu Picchu in 2025?

The first thing you should do from wherever you are in the world is to find a flight to the capital of Peru – Lima. From Lima, you can take a bus or a flight to the city of Cusco. This second option is the fastest way with an approximate travel time of one and a half hours.

Once you’re in the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco, which is at an altitude of 3,400 meters (or 11,100 feet) above sea level, there’s just one more trip to get to Machu Picchu.

How to Get to Machu Picchu From Cusco

  • From the city of Cusco, you have to take a bus, train, taxi, public transportation, or private transport to Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo is at an altitude of 2,792 meters (9,160 feet) above sea level and is separated from the city of Cusco by about 72km. The trip takes about an hour and a half to two hours.
  • From Ollantaytambo, you take a train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town), which is at an altitude of 2,400 meters (7,800 feet) above sea level. There are different options for the train service to Machu Picchu, which vary in price according to the experience offered during the journey to Aguas Calientes.
  • From Aguas Calientes, you take a bus to the entrance of the citadel or hike up for free (but the path is pretty steep).
