For many travelers, buying Machu Picchu tickets in person has been the last option when online reservations were sold out. The Ministry of Culture in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) releases 1,000 tickets each day for visitors who did not book in advance. Until recently, most people who joined the line could purchase entry for the following day, and during quieter periods some travelers even found same-day availability. That process changed on May 7, 2026.

Because of growing demand, the Ministry of Culture announced that these last-minute tickets may now be sold up to three days in advance. This means travelers arriving today may only find tickets for two or three days later. Anyone planning Peru travel should be aware of this new rule before relying on in-person availability.
Machu Picchu Tickets Are No Longer Sold Only for the Next Day
The traditional system was straightforward. Travelers arrived in Aguas Calientes, waited in line at the Machu Picchu ticket office to buy one of the 1,000 daily Machu Picchu tickets that are sold in person to passport holders. In the majority of cases, the ticket was valid for the next day. Now, that’s no longer guaranteed. For example, if you arrived on May 13th, the earliest available ticket was for May 15th or May 16th. This means spending extra days waiting in Aguas Calientes, a small tourist hub with limited activities. Because most visitors arrive by train, traveling back and forth to the Sacred Valley or Cusco is neither convenient nor inexpensive.
Also, note that the Machu Picchu office is selling tickets up to 10:00 pm, but if you’re lining up in the afternoon/evening, there’s no guarantee that you’ll make it to the front of the line in time. And tickets are sold by date until that date sells out. So, for example, if you buy a ticket in the early afternoon, you could get caught with the last tickets available for 2 days later, i.e., not-so-ideal entry times or circuits (i.e., a half circuit instead of a complete circuit); whereas, if you had made it to the front of the line a few hours later, you could’ve had your choice of the best entry times and circuits for 3 days later once all of the tickets for 2 days later sell out.

This new system was introduced to better manage the large number of visitors seeking tickets to Machu Picchu 2026 as we enter peak travel season.
Why Tickets to Machu Picchu in 2026 Are Selling Out Faster
Two major changes explain why tickets are disappearing more quickly.
- The first reason is the start of peak tourist season in Cusco, Peru. From May through September, thousands of travelers arrive in Cusco and compete for limited entry slots.
- The second reason is a new rule affecting the Inca Trail. Before 2026, hikers received Machu Picchu admission as part of their trail permit. Beginning in January 2026, the Inca Trail permit and Machu Picchu tickets became separate reservations. Trekkers must now purchase both, increasing competition for the same inventory. This means that hikers and regular visitors are all trying to secure the same limited number of entries.
Machu Picchu Tours Should Be Booked Months Ahead
Recent availability reports show how quickly tickets sell out. In one example, all 1,000 tickets for May 14 were gone, while approximately half of the tickets for May 15 had already been assigned.
| Booking Option | Recommended Timing | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| Official online reservation | 2–4 months in advance | Low |
| In-person purchase in Aguas Calientes | 2–3 days before entry | High |
| Peak season without reservations | No guarantee | Very High |
Travelers planning Machu Picchu Tours should reserve as early as possible to avoid extra hotel nights and changes to train schedules.

A Better Strategy for Peru Travel
If visiting Machu Picchu is a priority, booking 4 to 6 months ahead is the safest choice. Last-minute tickets are still available, but they’re now sold further in advance than before and may become even harder to obtain as demand increases. Securing tickets early is the best way to keep your Peru travel plans on schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Still Buy Last-Minute Machu Picchu Tickets?
Yes. The Ministry of Culture continues to release 1,000 tickets daily in Aguas Calientes, but the earliest available date may be two or three days later.
Why Are Machu Picchu Tickets Harder to Get in 2026?
Peak-season demand and the separation of Inca Trail permits from Machu Picchu entry tickets have increased competition for the same limited spaces.
How Early Should I Book Machu Picchu Tours?
For travel between May and September, booking 5 to 6 months in advance is strongly recommended. Outside of that peak season, booking 4 to 5 months in advance is enough time.
