Machu Picchu Tickets: How to Secure Your Spot in Advance (and What to Do if You’re Last-Minute)

Visiting Machu Picchu is a dream for travelers from all over the world, and securing tickets to Machu Picchu ahead of time is the key to a stress-free experience. There are now two official ways to get your Machu Picchu tickets: in Cusco or in Aguas Calientes.

At Peru Travel With Purpose, we always recommend purchasing in Cusco well in advance — and we take care of the process for you from start to finish. Our team personally visits the Ministry of Culture office in Cusco to secure your Machu Picchu tickets 4–6 months before your trip. This ensures you have guaranteed access, even during peak travel seasons when tickets often sell out quickly.

However, if you haven’t booked early, there’s still a second option. Since June 2024, the Ministry of Culture has allowed travelers to buy their Machu Picchu tickets directly in Aguas Calientes — a convenient solution for last-minute travelers who didn’t secure tickets in Cusco. Also, since July 2025, there have been recent changes to make this process smoother.

Three Ways To Buy Your Tickets

  1. Buying in Cusco – the recommended option
Getting your tickets in Cusco gives you more flexibility when choosing your entry time and circuit. This is especially important if you want to customize your Machu Picchu tour or combine it with Sacred Valley excursions. Booking early through our agency means you avoid long lines, last-minute stress, and any unexpected changes to the ticket system. With Peru Travel With Purpose, we handle everything months ahead so you can focus on enjoying your journey. This is particularly valuable during high season, when availability for tickets to Machu Picchu can disappear quickly.
  2. Buying Online
Ticket availability online is the same as what we’ll see when we purchase your Machu Picchu tickets in Cusco. What’s important to note here is that there’s an extra charge for paying by credit card online. When you check out online, the system will give you the option of going in person to the office in Cusco to pay to avoid the surcharge.
  3. Buying in Aguas Calientes – the backup plan
If you missed the chance to book in Cusco, you can still purchase your tickets in Aguas Calientes (a day trip away from Cusco). There, the local Ministry of Culture office is just steps from the main square of Aguas Calientes and has five service windows to keep the process moving smoothly.

How To Buy In Aguas Calientes

Here’s what you need to know about buying last-minute Machu Picchu tickets in Aguas Calientes:

  • Daily limit: up to 1,000 tickets per day, first-come, first-served.
  • Best time to arrive: before 6:00 a.m. (there are always line-ups)
  • Ticket validity: most frequently for the day after purchase (so you have to stay overnight in the town of Aguas Calientes)
  • Requirements: physical passport only (no copies) and each person in your group needs to be there in person
  • Payment: cash in soles or card (depending on connectivity)

This system has reduced lines and confusion, making it a reliable solution for travelers without pre-booked tickets.
