Traveling on PeruRail? Everything You Need to Know About Luggage Restrictions

Traveling with PeruRail is one of the highlights of visiting Peru. Whether you’re taking the iconic PeruRail train to Machu Picchu, riding the scenic PeruRail Titicaca Train, or exploring other breathtaking destinations, it’s essential to understand the luggage rules for a hassle-free trip.

What Are PeruRail’s Luggage Rules?

When boarding any PeruRail train, each passenger – including adults and children – is allowed to bring one piece of luggage.

Here are the general rules:

  • Hand Luggage:
    • 1 small bag or backpack per person
    • Weight limit: 8 kg (17.64 lb)
    • Size limit: 157 cm (sum of height, width, and length)
  • Hold Luggage (only on select long-distance routes):
    • Passengers traveling on the PeruRail Titicaca Train or long-distance routes to Puno, Cusco, or Arequipa can bring up to two pieces of hold luggage.
    • Combined weight: 23 kg (50.6 lb)

Important Updates (2025):

  • Each passenger – including children – can bring only one piece of luggage (hand luggage or backpack). This rule applies to all PeruRail services.
  • Please note: The Hiram Bingham train does not offer luggage storage, so passengers should bring only essentials for the journey.

For most Machu Picchu tours, only hand luggage is allowed, so pack light! Larger bags won’t be permitted onboard due to space constraints and safety regulations.

Routes and Luggage Allowances

Your luggage allowance depends on the type of PeruRail service you’re taking:

  • To Machu Picchu (Expedition, Vistadome, or Hiram Bingham):
    • 1 hand luggage item per person (up to 8 kg and 157 cm)
    • Larger bags must be stored at your hotel or in designated luggage storage areas
  • To Puno or Cusco (PeruRail Titicaca Train or Andean Explorer):
    • Up to 2 pieces of hold luggage (max 23 kg total)
    • Plus 1 hand luggage item (max 8 kg)

Pro Tip: If you’re trekking the Inca Trail as part of a Machu Picchu tour, you can request special luggage considerations. Email equipaje@perurail.com at least 48 hours before your journey for assistance (subject to space availability).

Where to Store Bigger Bags?

If your luggage exceeds the size or weight limits, don’t worry! PeruRail provides free luggage storage services at the following stations:

  • Ollantaytambo Station: Open daily from 4:15 AM to 9:00 PM.
  • Machu Picchu Station: Open daily from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Alternatively, many hotels in Cusco or Ollantaytambo offer storage services, so you can leave your larger bags behind while enjoying your PeruRail train to Machu Picchu or other destinations.

Packing Tips for Your PeruRail Journey

To make your PeruRail experience enjoyable, here are some practical packing tips:

  • Bring the Essentials: Include your ID or passport, train tickets, sunscreen, water bottle, a light jacket, and a camera to capture the stunning scenery.
  • Wear Layers: The Andean weather can change quickly, so dress in layers instead of packing bulky clothes.
  • Snacks & Water: While PeruRail provides refreshments on most trains, having your favorite snacks or an extra water bottle is always a good idea.
  • Go Eco-Friendly: Use reusable water bottles and sustainable toiletries to minimize your environmental impact while traveling.

What About Prohibited Items?

For the safety of all passengers, certain items are not allowed on PeruRail trains:

  • Weapons, ammunition, and explosives
  • Flammable or hazardous substances
  • Any items that could pose a risk to passengers, staff, or property

Be sure to double-check your bags before heading to the station to avoid any issues.

Why Pack Light for Your PeruRail Journey?

Whether you’re heading to the ancient ruins on a Machu Picchu tour, crossing the highlands aboard the luxurious PeruRail Titicaca Train, or simply enjoying the breathtaking views from the PeruRail Vistadome, packing light ensures a stress-free trip.

These luggage rules aren’t just about space-they also help keep exits clear and comply with Peruvian safety laws. By traveling with just the essentials, you’ll enjoy more comfort and ease as you take in the stunning views of Peru’s landscapes.

By following these luggage guidelines, you’ll avoid unnecessary stress and make the most of your adventure. Pack light, travel smart, and get ready for a train ride filled with stunning vistas, cozy vibes, and memories that will last a lifetime.
