Visiting Machu Picchu: Can I Bring a Backpack to Machu Picchu?

Planning to visit Peru, especially Machu Picchu and wondering about the rules for bringing a backpack? It’s important to know the guidelines, so you can enjoy your trip without any hassles.

Backpack Size Limits at Machu Picchu

When visiting the Machu Picchu archaeological site, you’re only allowed to bring a small backpack. Specifically, your backpack should be no larger than 40x35x20 cm (about 16x14x8 inches) or have a capacity of less than 30 liters. This rule is strictly enforced for the preservation of the archeologicla site and to ensure a smooth flow of visitors.

What if my backpack is larger?
No worries! If your backpack exceeds these size limits, you can leave it in storage at the entrance of the Machu Picchu site. The storage fee is very reasonable—just S/.5 per backpack. This way, you can explore the ancient ruins comfortably, knowing your belongings are safely stored.

If you stayed overnight in Aguas Calientes (Machupicchu Town) at the base of the mountain, it’s also common to leave larger backpacks or luggage at your hotel before taking the bus or hiking up to the archeological site. This is typically free, and you can pick up your backpacks or luggage when you come back down from your tour.

Traveling with PeruRail: Baggage Info

If you’re traveling to Machu Picchu by train with PeruRail, there are some additional baggage rules to keep in mind. PeruRail allows you to bring one carry-on bag with a maximum weight of 5 kg (11 lbs) and dimensions no larger than 62 linear inches (the sum of length, width, and height). This means you’ll need to pack light for your journey. PeruRail’s baggage policy has all the details.

If you have extra luggage, you can leave it at your hotel or make arrangements with PeruRail for additional baggage services. Packing smart will make your Machu Picchu tours more enjoyable, and you’ll have everything you need for your adventure at Machu Picchu.

TLDR:
  • Bring a small backpack (under 30L) for your visit to Machu Picchu.
  • Store larger backpacks at the entrance for S/.5.
  • Check PeruRail’s baggage policy to ensure smooth travel.

By following these simple guidelines, you’ll be all set for a fantastic visit to one of the most iconic places in the world! Whether you’ve planned a Machu Picchu 1-Day Tour or a longer Peru trip, enjoy your journey to Machu Picchu, and don’t forget to take lots of photos to capture the memories.
