ELIM Orphanage

ELIM Hogares Orphanage Homes

ELIM Orphanage was founded in 2000 by Nilda Escobar, a local social worker who began by providing food to street children and was housing 6 of them in a permanent location two short years later. The small, family-run non-profit organization has since grown to provide a home for up to 30 children at a time as well as volunteer accommodation in safe, comfortable rooms separate from the children. As a volunteer with ELIM Orphanage, you would be treated as one of the ELIM family from the second you arrive.

The ELIM Orphanage homes are conveniently located within walking distance of local shops and markets, and include:

  • Private rooms and bathrooms
  • Hot Showers
  • Common areas
  • A shared Kitchen
  • Self-catering
  • A relaxed atmosphere
  • 3rd floor exclusive to volunteers, including a large communal kitchen and dining space (boys’ home only)

For US$10 per night to stay at the orphanage, here’s what you need to know:

  • Volunteers are free to get involved as much or as little as they’d like
  • No minimum stay
  • No commission fees
  • No fixed working hours
  • Knowledge of Spanish is not necessary (you can learn while you’re here)
  • You’ll have free time to explore Cusco and visit sites such as Machu Picchu
  • You’ll have the opportunity to meet other volunteers from all around the world

Kallarisunchis

Quechua for “Let’s Begin”

Founded in 1993, Kallarisunchis is a non-profit Christian organization that serves and works with people of all religious and non-religious backgrounds. It targets the most vulnerable and needy in urban and rural areas in and around Cusco, Peru. The Quechuan word “Kallarisunchis” is a native word that means “Let’s Begin” – this speaks to its roots providing microloans to small businesses, but now encompasses the sense of drive to motivate and help those who find themselves in extreme poverty, especially during the current health crisis due to COVID-19.

Kallarisunchis assists in the following areas:

  • Microcredit – economic empowerment of individuals or families who have no or low income with the intention of improving family income for increased financial freedom
  • Savings – help people manage their savings and finances for financial sustainability

  • Families of low income in rural and urban areas
  • Senior Citizens in need, including those who are alone or abandoned
