Planning to visit Peru soon? One of the most common questions travelers ask is: Does Peru require vaccinations? While Peru is a safe and welcoming destination, it’s always a good idea to be prepared health-wise before your journey.
Peru Vaccine Requirements: What You Need to Know
According to the CDC travel vaccines for Peru, the following vaccinations are recommended:
✔ Routine Vaccines – Most travelers have these from childhood, including:
- Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)
- Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP/Tdap)
- Chickenpox (Varicella)
- Polio
- Influenza
✔ Hepatitis A & B – Recommended for most travelers, as Hepatitis A can be transmitted through contaminated food or water.
✔ Typhoid – Important if you’re eating street food or visiting rural areas.
✔ Yellow Fever – Required only if you plan to visit the Amazon rainforest. Not necessary for Lima, Cusco, or Machu Picchu.
✔ Rabies (Optional) – Only needed if you plan to work with animals or explore very remote areas.
Does Peru Require Vaccinations for Entry?
For most travelers, Peru does not require vaccinations for entry. However, if you’re coming from a country with a high risk of Yellow Fever, you may need proof of vaccination. Also, some countries may require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination if you’re traveling from Peru afterward, especially if you visited the Amazon.
Do You Need All These Vaccines for Your Peru Trip?
Most travelers already have the routine vaccines, and if you’re sticking to tourist spots like Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu, you may only need Hepatitis A and Typhoid. However, if you’re venturing into the Amazon rainforest or rural areas, additional precautions like Yellow Fever vaccination are recommended.
